'Palestinian Representation at Paris Olympics: IOC Commitment to Inclusivity

In a significant move towards ensuring equitable representation, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has pledged to extend invitations to Palestinian athletes to participate in the upcoming Paris Olympics, even if they fail to qualify through traditional channels. This commitment underscores the IOC's unwavering support for athletes from all backgrounds and its dedication to fostering inclusivity within the Olympic movement.

IOC President Thomas Bach affirmed the organization's commitment during an interview at its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. He highlighted the ongoing qualification events for the Paris Games, which commence on July 26, across various sports. However, he emphasized that the IOC would extend invitations to the Palestinian National Olympic Committee (NOC) should no athletes secure qualification through competitive means. This approach aligns with the IOC's practice of extending invitations to NOCs without qualified athletes.

Bach expressed his anticipation of a Palestinian delegation comprising six to eight athletes, a testament to the IOC's efforts to provide a platform for athletes from underrepresented regions. He emphasized the IOC's unwavering support for Palestinian athletes, especially in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has posed significant challenges to their training and participation in sporting events.

IOC's Even-Handed Approach to Geopolitical Conflicts

Bach dismissed suggestions that the IOC had treated Russia's invasion of Ukraine differently from Israel's conflict in Gaza. He underlined the IOC's consistent and principled stance against violations of the Olympic truce and the annexation of sports organizations.

Regarding Russia, the IOC imposed sanctions following its invasion of Ukraine, barring Russian athletes from competing under their national flag at the Paris Olympics. Additionally, athletes must demonstrate a lack of public support for the war and have no affiliation with the military or security services to participate.

Bach emphasized that these sanctions stemmed from Russia's clear violation of the Olympic truce during its invasion of Ukraine, which occurred shortly after the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. He also cited Russia's annexation of Ukrainian sports organizations as a factor in the sanctions.

In contrast to the situation in Ukraine, Bach characterized the conflict between Israel and Palestine as distinct. He reaffirmed the IOC's consistent condemnation of the Hamas attack on Israel and the tragic consequences of the war in Gaza. From the outset, the IOC expressed its horror and concern over the conflict and its devastating impact on the region.

Bach emphasized that the IOC has consistently condemned violations of the Olympic truce and the politicization of sports. The IOC's commitment to neutrality and impartiality guides its decision-making, ensuring that sporting events remain a platform for unity and peace.'
